Canoe with Mark "Bird" Westall

Welcome to Sanibel Island. Bird Westall wants to help you explore the wildest parts of this world-renowned tropical paradise. Bird has been running these trips since 1978. He came to Sanibel in search of Utopia. Of course, Utopia doesn't exist, but Sanibel comes close.

During his 30+ years of fighting to preserve Sanibel's unique environment, Bird has been involved with many commuity activities and programs. He was licensed for many years to move wayward alligators from peoples driveways. He started The International Osprey Foundation. He was a member of the Lee County Bald Eagle Technical Advisory Commitee for over eleven years. He was on Sanibel's City Council for eight years and served as its Mayor for one of those years.

Let Bird take you on his most popular trip through the designated Wilderness Area of the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge trip usually goes twice a day: to watch the birds feed at low tide or to watch the birds come in to roost at sunset. Bird uses a 19' canoe that can carry five passengers (and no canoeing experience is necessary) plus himself. Two more smaller canoes that can carry three people apiece are the most that is allowed on these two trips.

Or experience the solitude of Sanibel's very own freshwater wetlands system. Sanibel is one of the few barrier islands in the world that has a freshwater system on the surface. And there is no one else as knowledgeable about this system than Bird. Because of the nature of this trip, seating is limited to no more than five customers.

All the trips last for 2-3 hours and the cost is $45/adult and $25/child (under 18).
